2015 UFO Sightings

January 21, 2015 — GIMBAL Video (USS Theodore Roosevelt)

One of the most famous and officially released UAP videos was captured on January 21, 2015, by an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet from the USS Theodore Roosevelt off the East Coast of the United States near Jacksonville, Florida.

The infrared footage, known as the GIMBAL video, shows a rotating, oblong object with a distinct heat signature. The pilots can be heard on the audio expressing confusion and amazement at the object’s behavior.

A second video, known as the GoFast video, was recorded either the same day or within weeks of the GIMBAL incident. Both videos were officially declassified and released by the Department of Defense in April 2020, along with the 2004 Nimitz “Tic Tac” footage.

Pilot Testimonies

Pilots from the VFA-11 “Red Rippers” fighter squadron reported encountering these objects “almost daily” during training operations off the East Coast in 2014–2015. Two pilots, Lt. Ryan Graves and Lt. Danny Accoin, publicly shared their experiences.

Key observations from the pilots include:

• Objects with “no distinct wings, no distinct tail, no distinct exhaust plume.”
• One pilot described them as “a sphere encasing a cube.”
• Objects capable of rapid acceleration, deceleration, and hypersonic speeds with maneuvers “beyond the physical limits of a human crew.”
• Objects appearing at 30,000 feet and descending to sea level.
• Persistent presence — sometimes remaining in the area “all day.”

The encounters were so frequent that pilots reportedly said, “We’re seeing one of those damn things again.” Radar contacts, infrared detections, and visual confirmations were recorded by multiple sensors and aircraft, including E-2 Hawkeye squadrons.

One incident nearly resulted in a mid-air collision, prompting the squadron to file a formal aviation safety report (Notice to Airmen).

Official Confirmation

The Pentagon confirmed the authenticity of both the GIMBAL and GoFast videos. Pentagon spokeswoman Susan Gough stated that the videos were recorded by naval aviators and are part of “a larger issue of an increased number of training range incursions by unidentified aerial phenomena in recent years.”

When the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier group deployed to the Persian Gulf in March 2015, the objects reportedly followed them, though sightings became less frequent in that region.

U.S. Air Force Releases UFO Files – Project Blue Book

Project Blue Book, the UFO project based out of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and ran from 1947 to 1969. Through the project, the Air Force amassed a total of 12,618 recorded sightings. Out of that total, 701 incidents remain “unidentified.” A University of Colorado report called the “Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects” found that “there has been no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as ‘unidentified’ are extraterrestrial vehicles,” according to a 1985 Air Force fact sheet. Project Blue Book officially ended on Dec. 17, 1969.

While Project Blue Book files have long been available to the public on microfilm at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., this marks the first time that the complete collection of declassified documents has been made available through a searchable online database.
