Notable Mention Classic UFO Encounters: Timeless Cases That Still Defy Explanation

While I’ve dedicated full pages to landmark events like the Kenneth Arnold sighting, the Roswell incident, the Mantell tragedy, and the 1952 Washington DC flap, here are other highly significant classic UFO encounters and mass sightings that deserve their own spotlight.
Battle of Los Angeles (February 1942)
Just three months after Pearl Harbor and well before the term “flying saucer” entered our vocabulary, Los Angeles was put on alert. On the night of February 24–25, 1942, air raid sirens sounded as searchlights locked onto a large object hovering over the city. Anti-aircraft batteries fired over 1,400 rounds. Witnesses described something massive that appeared to withstand the barrage before slowly moving away. The official explanation later shifted from possible Japanese attack to “war nerves,” yet no wreckage was ever recovered.
This remains one of the earliest major UFO events in modern history and raises serious questions about what authorities knew even then.
Chiles-Whitted Encounter (July 24, 1948)
Just one year after the Roswell crash made headlines, Eastern Airlines pilots Clarence Chiles and John Whitted had a close encounter while flying a DC-3 near Montgomery, Alabama. They reported a bright, cigar-shaped object with two rows of windows and a fiery exhaust that nearly collided with their aircraft. The object was described as wingless and moving at incredible speed.
This case stood out to early Air Force investigators because of the experienced pilot witnesses and helped shape Project Sign’s thinking.
Lubbock Lights (August–September 1951)
In the summer of 1951, residents of Lubbock, Texas — including three college professors — repeatedly witnessed large V-shaped or semi-circular formations of soft blue-white lights moving silently across the night sky. Some of the sightings were photographed. Project Blue Book looked into the case but offered explanations that many witnesses found unsatisfactory. The explanation was birds glowing from the new street lights underneath. While some accepted this others was skeptical because the objects was moving really fast at a high altitude.
Westall UFO Incident (April 6, 1966)
One of Australia’s most compelling mass sightings occurred when more than 200 students and teachers at Westall High School in Melbourne watched a gray saucer-shaped object descend into a nearby field, hover, and then depart. Some reported multiple craft and a rapid military presence afterward. Physical traces were reportedly found at the landing site.
The 1973 Flap: Pascagoula Abduction & Coyne Helicopter Incident
1973 was a particularly active year for UFO reports. On October 11, shipyard workers Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker claimed they were abducted by strange robotic beings while fishing in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The raw emotion captured on a secret police recording still moves listeners today. Both later passed polygraph test, they believed what they said. In his 2018 book Calvin Parker said he sometimes wondered if the beings was demons rather than extraterrestrials. Both of the gentlemen was also interviewed under hypnosis by Dr. Allen Hynek and concluded they had a very real & terrifying experience. Still there is plenty of critics of the legitimacy of their encounter.
Just one week later, on October 18, Army Reserve Captain Lawrence Coyne and his helicopter crew encountered a large cigar-shaped craft over Mansfield, Ohio. The object hovered above their helicopter, emitted a green beam, and the aircraft reportedly rose uncontrollably before the object sped away. All four crew members told the same story.
Tehran UFO Incident (September 19, 1976)
One of the strongest international military cases on record. Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantom jets were scrambled to intercept a brilliant diamond-shaped object over Tehran. Both pilots reported severe electromagnetic interference — weapons and communication systems failed when they approached. Radar tracked the object, and a smaller probe reportedly separated from the main craft.
Hudson Valley UFO Wave (1982–1986)
Thousands of witnesses across New York and New England reported a massive boomerang or V-shaped craft with bright lights moving slowly and silently through the region for several years. Police officers were among those who filed detailed reports.
Belgian UFO Wave (November 1989 – April 1990)
One of the best-documented triangular craft flaps in history. Thousands of people, including police, reported large silent triangles. On March 30–31, 1990, Belgian F-16s pursued the objects, obtaining radar locks while the craft demonstrated impossible acceleration and maneuvers. The Belgian military publicly stated the sightings remained unexplained.
Phoenix Lights (March 13, 1997)
One of the largest mass sightings in U.S. history. Thousands of Arizona residents, including then-Governor Fife Symington, witnessed a huge V-shaped craft with lights moving silently overhead. A separate military flare drop later that night is generally distinguished from the main event. The first sighting of the V-Shaped Craft (8pm – 8:45pm) was said to be 5 A-10 Thunderbolts flying in formation from Maryland to Tucson for routine winter pilot training. The later 10pm onward sighting of row of lights is said to been from illumination flares dropped by other A-10s doing night training at Barry M. Goldwater Airforce Range.
Chicago O’Hare Airport Sighting (November 7, 2006)
In this classic UFO encounter United Airlines employees and pilots observed a metallic, disc-shaped object hovering over Gate C-17 at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. The object then shot straight up through the clouds, leaving a clear hole. The incident was never adequately explained by authorities.
Stephenville Lights (January 2008)
Dozens of witnesses in Stephenville, Texas, including a pilot, reported a massive object with bright lights being chased by F-16 jets. Initial military denials were later revised after radar data and witness testimony emerged. Airforce initially denied having any aircraft in the air near Stephenville at the time of this classic UFO encounter but 2 weeks later admitted 10 F-16s was flying training missions in that area. Airforce blamed “internal communications error” but this just fueled the conspiracy that the jets was chasing the UFO. Pilot Steve Allen said that the jets appeared to be chasing the larger craft. MUFON later obtained radar that showed an unindentified object without a transponder that at times moved at very high speeds.
This is one my favorite cases of recent memory because it fits a long pattern we’ve seen in other classic UFO encounters — initial denial, public pressure, then a mundane explanation that doesn’t fully satisfy the witnesses. It naturally leads people to wonder: Were those F-16s responding to something they couldn’t explain?
My Personal Reflections
These classic UFO encounters share recurring themes: extreme performance, silent operation, electromagnetic effects, and official hesitation. I personally believe some represent genuine non-human intelligence — possibly with deep connections to our oceans, ancient history, and even spirituality. I explore these ideas further in my writings on the Earth Colonization Theory, Theories Behind UFOs, and Unidentified Submersible Objects (USOs).
The government has released more information in recent years through official declassified files, but I remain convinced we’re still only getting partial truths. That’s why I support the Full Disclosure Movement. At the time of writing this the government is said to have 10,000 more documents to release.
The truth is out there — and I believe we’re getting closer to it.
