Washington D.C. 1952 UFO Event

Washington D.C. UFO Flap of 1952

One of the Most Significant Mass UFO Sightings in History

In July 1952, Washington D.C. became the center of one of the most dramatic and well-documented UFO events ever recorded. Over two consecutive weekends, unidentified objects were tracked on radar by multiple air traffic control centers and visually confirmed by commercial pilots, military personnel, and ground observers — including sightings directly over the U.S. Capitol and White House area.

The Events of July 19–20, 1952

At 11:40 p.m. on July 19, air traffic controller Edward Nugent at Washington National Airport detected seven unknown targets on radar, located 15 miles south-southwest of the city. Senior controller Harry Barnes later described the objects as moving in completely radical patterns unlike any known aircraft.

Commercial pilot S.C. “Casey” Pierman, flying a Capital Airlines DC-4, reported seeing six bright white lights streaking across the sky. His visual sightings matched the radar returns in real time.

The Interceptions

The U.S. Air Force scrambled F-94 Starfire jet fighters from New Castle Air Force Base. Captain John McHugo and Lieutenant William Patterson were vectored toward the objects.

Lt. William Patterson reported seeing four bright white “glows” and attempted to pursue them. He later told investigators: “I tried to make contact with the bogies below 1,000 feet… I was at my maximum speed but I ceased chasing them because I saw no chance of overtaking them.” At one point, the objects reportedly surrounded his aircraft before speeding away at extraordinary velocities — radar showed speeds up to **7,000 mph**.

July 26–27 Repeat Performance

The second major wave occurred on the night of July 26. Radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews Air Force Base again tracked multiple unidentified objects. Visual sightings included glowing orange discs and lights performing impossible maneuvers.

The incidents made front-page news across the country and prompted one of the largest UFO investigations by the U.S. military at that time. President Harry Truman was briefed on the events.

Official Explanation vs. Witness Accounts

The U.S. Air Force later attributed the radar returns to “temperature inversions.” However, this explanation has been widely criticized by the pilots, controllers, and radar operators who were directly involved, many of whom maintained that what they saw could not be explained by weather phenomena.

Why This Case Remains Important

  • Multiple independent radar systems confirmed the objects
  • Trained military and commercial pilots provided consistent visual corroboration
  • The sightings occurred over restricted airspace near the nation’s capital
  • It remains one of the strongest mass-witness cases in UFO history

The 1952 Washington D.C. flap helped spark widespread public and governmental interest in the UFO phenomenon and continues to be studied to this day.

One of the most compelling chapters in the history of unexplained aerial phenomena — witnessed directly above the seat of American power.
